Summary

The Senior Manager, Federal Affairs advocates and communicates Salt River Project (SRP) policy positions on issues pending before the U.S. Congress and at federal agencies; serves as a lobbyist on several key issues, including water and natural resources policy, energy policy, and tax/finance issues.

 

Collaborates with SRP business units and executive management to identify and assess emerging federal legislative and regulatory issues and priorities that may impact SRP’s electric customers, water shareholders, employees and elected officials; develops and manages governmental affairs strategies and activities to achieve corporate goals and objectives.

What You'll Do

  • Manage multiple aspects of Federal Affairs’ issue portfolio and strategy which requires effectively articulating and communicating SRP's position on federal legislative issues to Members of Congress, their staff, and other key decision makers in the public policy process; Develop and maintain a large network of contacts on Capitol Hill and within the Administration and relevant agencies; keep current on industry issues; monitor and report to Senior Director relevant developments in a timely manner.
  • Inform and advise GM staff and executive management of identified priority issues and develop positions on issues influenced by the federal government; work with SRP business units to determine the potential impacts/benefits to policies and proposals.
  • Request and conduct meetings and briefings with congressional offices, committee staff, and members of the Administration and agencies to advocate for SRP positions. 
  • Directly respond to inquiries from Capitol Hill, the Administration, and industry allies regarding SRP positions, requests for information, and input on legislation; represent SRP interests with a variety of trade groups and coalitions.
  • Draft weekly Federal Affairs report and provide reports on activities and developments to SRP management on key issues.
  • Develop and implement legislative strategies on designated issues.
  • Must be able to interpret political and policy developments on Capitol Hill and align priorities with SRP’s corporate objectives.

What It Takes To Succeed

Job will require registering as a federal lobbyist.

Must be able to work independently and possess strong self‐initiative in carrying out job responsibilities.

Must have superb writing skills and political acumen.

Some travel is required as is attending some evening events.

Experience

A minimum of eight years of related experience is required (if no degree, 12 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and related experience totaling 12 years). 

 

  • Related experience is defined as: working on  Capitol Hill, within a federal agency, government relations, or similar function interacting with or influencing legislative and regulatory policy. 
  • Senior roles on Capitol Hill or equivalent position within the Executive Branch preferred. Previous advocacy experience and background in water, energy, environmental issues a plus.
  • Must possess network of contacts on Capitol Hill, a demonstrated understanding of the legislative process, and strong written and verbal communication skills.

Education

A bachelor’s degree related to the assignment from an accredited institution is preferred.

 

Hybrid Workplace

SRP currently offers a hybrid workplace, which allows employees whose jobs can be performed remotely, and who have sufficient technical capability, to telework up to three days per week. Although teleworking is available, all employees must live and work in Arizona.
