Summary

SUMMARY:

 

The Executive Director of Surgical and Procedural Services is a dynamic and seasoned leader responsible for overseeing the daily operations and management of surgical and procedural services at Sinai Hospital. This includes leading clinical and administrative activities across various specialized units, including the General Operating Room (GOR), Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics (RIAO), Cardiac OR (COR), Gastrointestinal Diagnostic Center (GIDC), Children’s Diagnostic Center (CDC), Pre & Postoperative Services, and Pre-Anesthesia Screening Services (PASS). The Executive Director will partner with the Anesthesia Director to manage utilization of anesthesia resources across all sites of service at Sinai Hospital within perioperative and procedural services, cardiac and imaging. The Executive Director ensures optimal patient care, quality outcomes, compliance with regulatory standards, and efficient department operations.

 

SURGICAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT:

 

The main/general Operating Room (OR/GOR) has 22 OR suites and 5 GI rooms. The Executive Director will also have oversight of the Cardiac OR (COR), RIAO Operating Room for Orthopedics, Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC), and GI Diagnostic Center (GIDC). Surgical Services has over 140 FTEs in staff and has an average daily surgical case load of 35-50 surgeries. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

 

Leadership & Strategic Oversight

• Lead and manage a diverse and multidisciplinary team within the surgical and procedural services division, including nurses, technicians, and support staff.
• Develop and implement strategic goals, objectives, and policies to enhance operational efficiency, quality of care, and patient safety across all covered areas.
• Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement in surgical and procedural services.
• Work closely with other hospital leadership teams to align surgical and procedural services with organizational goals and objectives.

Clinical Operations Management

• Oversee the General Operating Room (GOR), Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics (RIAO), Cardiac OR (COR), Gastrointestinal Diagnostic Center (GIDC), Children’s Diagnostic Center (CDC), Pre & Postoperative Services, and Pre-Anesthesia Screening Services (PASS), ensuring that services are delivered safely, effectively and efficiently.
• Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and medical teams to optimize case scheduling, resource allocation, and patient flow.
• Ensure that all areas maintain a high standard of patient care, from preoperative assessment to postoperative recovery, minimizing complications and improving recovery times.

Staff Management & Development

• Provide leadership, mentoring, and professional development opportunities to nursing and surgical staff.
• Oversee recruitment, training, and retention strategies to ensure the department is staffed with highly skilled professionals.
• Implement performance appraisals, staff evaluations, and address any performance concerns through a clear and effective process.

Financial & Resource Management

• Develop and manage budgets for surgical and procedural services, ensuring cost-effective use of resources while maintaining high-quality standards.
• Monitor surgical department expenditures, track resource utilization, and implement cost-saving initiatives without compromising patient care.
• Partner with surgeons to assess and manage supply utilization and waste reduction.
• Ensure adequate inventory and supply chain management across surgical services.

Quality & Compliance

• Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, including Joint Commission standards, OSHA, HIPAA, and any applicable local/state/national guidelines.
• Develop and oversee the implementation of quality improvement initiatives and patient safety protocols.
• Regularly assess clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction data, taking action as necessary to achieve organizational goal of zero harm.

Collaboration & Communication

• Serve as the primary liaison between surgical and procedural services, surgeons, physicians, and advanced practice providers, anesthesia, and hospital administration.
• Communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, addressing any operational challenges and facilitating effective problemsolving. Engage with surgeons, anesthesiologists, physicians and other stakeholders to ensure smooth coordination of care and patient safety.

Data-Driven Decision-Making

• Utilize key performance indicators (KPIs) and data analytics to monitor department performance and identify areas for improvement. Regularly review reports and outcomes to ensure the highest standards of patient care and operational performance.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS: 

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree required. Master's degree in nursing (MSN), Healthcare Administration (MHA), Business Administration (MBA), or a related field is preferred.
• Registered Nurse License (RN) - Current active Maryland license or eligibility to obtain Maryland license.
